A PUB chain has slashed the cost of a pint to just 99p.

The recession-busting move will give thirsty Brits their cheapest beer for 19 years.

And the even better news is that JD Wetherspoon bosses say the offer will run “indefinitely” at their 713 UK boozers.

There will also be price cuts on some bottled ales and lagers and on wines and spirits. A number of meals will be offered for just £2.99. The move comes amid a Goverment drive to stop binge-drinking fuelled by “happy hours” and cheap booze deals.

But pub trade groups say the clampdown hits ordinary, responsible clients.

And Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson insisted his company’s move would benefit punters. He said: “We appreciate the economic downturn means they have to be more careful with their cash.

“We believe our new prices will allow people to enjoy visiting a Wetherspoon pub without it costing them too much.

“Unlike most sales that start in January, our offers will not end within days but will run indefinitely.”

Wetherspoon bucked the credit crunch to open 20 new pubs at the end of 2008, creating hundreds of jobs.

so what happens when more pubs close because they can't compete with wetherspoons prices and are driven out of business
There will be only Wetherspoon pubs and no locals
Just like the supermarkets and corner shops all over again

No-one could compete with that, they all seem to be closing anyway no The stupid smoking ban alone messed things up!
Lol, the people on big brother have to stand in a giant ashtray to smoke, should do that round pubs, more entertaining, anyway, on with the 99p pints happy yay!

THE 99P BEER STAMPEDE

PUB chain JD Wetherspoon is gearing up for a stampede of cash-strapped boozers today as they slash prices to just 99p a pint.

bosses at the firm are giving drinkers recession-busting price cuts.

The new rates come into force today at the majority of their 780 pubs and will last “indefinitely”.

The price cut covers pints of IPA bitter and bottles of San Miguel lager.

Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson insisted his company’s move would benefit customers. He said: “We appreciate the economic downturn means they have to be more careful with their cash.

“We believe our new prices will allow people to enjoy visiting a Wetherspoon pub without it costing them too much.

“Unlike most sales that start in January, our offers will not end in days but will run indefinitely.”

Other firms have also joined the £1 club, slashing the cost of everyday items to a quid or less.

From today, Morrisons will offer fruit and veg – from seven oranges to 2.5kg of spuds – for £1.

And McDonald’s has a wide range of items on its menu for just 99p.

Retail expert Greg Hodge said “fixed price” shopping was taking the country by storm and was likely to get more popular as even snobby Brits feel the pinch.

He said: “People didn’t like to go, but they’re not so embarrassed to go to these sorts of places now.”

Asda is offering a jacket and matching skirt or trousers to office girls for £20 from today. The George City Suits follow the launch of the £19 men’s Perfect Fit suit.

And an Office Chic outfit will launch soon, offering a £10 pair of trousers that comes with a free blouse.

George boss Anthony Thompson said: “In 2009, UK women will need to make considered decisions when they shop for clothes and are having to save up to get high quality and value-for-money outfits.

“Classic items like the £20 suit are offering customers real value for money on what they consider as wardrobe essentials they wear every day rather than being seduced by gimmicky price promotions or disposable fashion.

“Having a workwear range in store that will suit everybody, no matter what your profession, is key to helping our customers get through what is going to be a tough year.”

Marks & Spencer recently reduced a wedding dress to just £15, while ASDA catered for budget brides with one that was just £60 at full price.

Other stores have cut up to 90% off goods to try and get broke Brits spending again.
