Thanks a lot bud,I don`t expect you to find the name,as I explained befor I have a theory that I suspect he is not from this area, maybe not even Wirral.

Carl's Cam lists all the names on most of the memorials in Cheshire. Follow the link, then click on "-memorials" in the line starting "Photos of:".

I've just looked up J Gordon on the GRO death index for the 3rd qtr of 1940, there are 11 of them, none of them local:

James 71 years S.Shields
James M.D. 69 years N.Bucks
Jemima 46 years Durham N.
John 48 years Stockport
John 79 years Conway
John 74 years Birmingham
John 68 years Wolverhampton
John under 1 year Wolverhampton
John E. 65 years W.Glamorgan
John R.S. 25 years Warwick

Uptoncx,I`m impressed with the length and effort you have gone to,however out of the list I think we can discount the following......

James 71 years S.Shields
James M.D. 69 years N.Bucks
John 79 years Conway
John 74 years Birmingham
John 68 years Wolverhampton
John under 1 year Wolverhampton
John E. 65 years W.Glamorgan
Julia 81 years Hull
Jemima 46 years Durham N.

This now leaves us with 2 possibilities....

John 48 years Stockport
John R.S. 25 years Warwick

It's before the air raids started ... suppose it could have been an accident of some sorts.

Maybe right but you can not discount the possiblity of bombers straffing the AA gun sites on thier way in or out of thier runs. The guy may of been hit a few weeks befor and died on that date and also like you say it could of been an accident.I suppose we will never find out.

According to some sources first Bomb landed in Wallasey on 1 May 1940 this was first bomb for the whole of Merseyside, most other sources talk about August 1940.

I think 1 may 1940 date is getting confused with 1 may 1941 the "first" day of the Blitz.

The bombers wouldn't straff, especially in areas with defences, they stayed as high as they could (at least 5000ft), too big and too slow (just over 200mph) making them an easy target.

My father always said that the first bomb on Merseyside fell on August 1940 in Prenton. Can't recall if he said Osmaston Road or not.

Unlike books by other authors on the Wirral, Ian Boumphrey's books are well researched and the info. within can be relied on.
