Hey folks,

I am reluctantly selling my old laptop as I have just purchased a 12.1" netbook/notebook, which being very small and lightweight, will be better suited to my needs. This laptop all in all has served me well (other than problems with Acer customer support) and has not let me down in the past 18 months or so, before which I got Acer to replace the hard drive due to failure and at the same time they also replaced the lower chassis as I complained it was starting to look a bit tatty.

My Own Review Of The Laptop – This Might Be The Boring Bit!!

The Pentium 4 is not a cut-down, weakened mobile CPU (processor), it is a full desktop version, albeit in an MicroPGA package. It features HyperThreading (HT) technology, which is set to make a high profile comeback in 2009 in the forthcoming Intel Core i7 (Nehalem) and is also currently featured in the new Intel Atom processor. HyperThreading can increase performance by up to 40% by simulating 2 CPU's on a single core, allowing for much smoother multitasking etc. A lot of modern programmes are designed to take advantage of HyperThreading, running two tasks at the same time instead of being limited to one, by efficiently making use of a part of the processor that would otherwise be idle. I am a heavy user, and do a LOT of multitasking, and this laptop still more than meets my needs with regards performance.

The Mobility Radeon 9700 is a dedicated DirectX 9.0c graphics processor; it was the first HD-capable mobile ATi graphics processor; it is still rated a class 3 GPU (out of 7 classes), which means it is still classed as a mid-range GPU, and should play most modern games (albeit the latest games like Crysis would be at lower settings). A dedicated graphics processor on a laptop is still something you have to pay a decent amount of money for. My new laptop has integrated graphics (in other words crap)...

512MB of RAM is certainly enough RAM for Windows XP – it runs with no issues or slowdowns. If you want to increase the RAM to 1.25GB, I can install this for you at cost, will be less than £20.00 and would be overkill for XP but the more the better of course.

I only purchased the new 250GB hard drive back in March 2008 and it is about as big as you can get for laptops. It is still under warranty (2.5yrs), and has not missed a beat since I bought it. The cheaper option for the 60GB is running fine as well, although I have not used it much in the past 6 months. I am sort of reluctant to part with the 250GB owing to the amount of data I have on it but will sell it if you want it.

The battery life is nothing to write home about; approx 25 minutes at best! However, you can pick up new batteries for these laptops very easily on the bay for around £22 or so. The AC adapter/charger works just fine however. A 6600mAh battery gives around 2:30hrs battery life iirc.

Its not the smallest laptop in the world, owing to the sheer power of it for its time (remember it has desktop components) but it is still very mobile, I regularly take it back and forth to the better half’s with no problems. It is in fair condition for its age, the screen has no noticeable scratches, and the base was replaced so that looks brand new. The back of the screen has the odd scratch/blemish now, but still scrubs up well. The NIC was damaged slightly and now comes loose sometimes when you move the laptop (is fine if it it sitting on a desk); I have replaced this however with a 10/100 PCMCIA NIC card although if you use wireless this would not bother you anyway.

The leather case is in excellent condition (hardly used it as I have a smaller travel case) and has an expensive look and feel, I think it cost about £35.00. It is of no use to me with a little 12" laptop so it has to go too. It has loads of practical space and pockets, it is perfect for international trips (from personal experience).

I don't mind providing basic support if the laptop is sold locally as I am a qualified IT Engineer, this does not mean I will be on call 24/7 as my second name isn’t Dell, but I am happy to assist locals where possible. The only hardware that is warranted is the 250GB hard drive, as it is still under manufacturer’s warranty. I can custom partition and setup the OS to meet your needs. I will not install Windows Vista unless you have purchased a valid license for it. Sorry!

Thanks!!

Davey davey davey.... their not new, I remember them being around a decade ago when they were doing all up market stuff!! But I dunno if they went bust as they disappeared for a while and then when they came back in about 2003, their pricing strategy had changed, as had their logo lol. Deffo get good bang for your buck with them, think this laptop cost about £900 in total but outran £1000+ machines! But their customer service is poor (although I must admit it seemed to have improved last time I used them). You're right, I should have said 50GB is the biggest PATA; im buying a 500GB SATA drive for me new one next month.

Robbo matey, ye just PM or email me and we shall discuss, dont mind giving you my mobile number by PM if thats of any help.
