Hopefully this can become a large topic with pictures and memories combined. It can be stretched from as far back as beyond most people can remember to as short ago as a few months back with the loss of St. Benedict's, Leasowe Primary, Wallasey School East Wing (it's how I remember it!) so hopefully people have some memories to share.
I'm only 25 but of the four schools I went to three of them have been demolished, as have the two I did my work experience in as a classroom assistant! Great Meols Primary School still stands but after that it gets grim: Leasowe Primary now has housing standing on it, Mosslands now has Weatherhead on its site and half of Wallasey School's gone and is now concentrated in its West Wing (Henry Meoles). As for the work experience two, Mount is now on Mount Pleasant Road and the wooden half of Lingham Primary is demolished too!
Touch of death I've got I think. And to think, my ultimate aim is to be a teacher!
[quote=PaulWirral] my dad went there, just wondering if you knew any1 by the name of Mark O'Rourke????
I vaguely recall that name...if he was there in the early 80s. I was there from 79-82 when I then moved to B'head and went to B.I. My memory is never that good though I recall names like Stephen Lee and Vijay Gupter!!
For anyone living in Wallasey and knows the Tavern...here is a pic when it was a school...
Didn't he use to grab the hair on the back of your head...?
He was a hell of a character!!
When I left Cheggar at the start of my 3rd year I then moved to B'head so changed school and I remember, days before, part of the fire escape on the outside of the building had collapsed - with no injuries thankfully.
I also remember having to go to Bebington School For Girls for PE!! If I bunked off I would hide out on Town Lanes cementary (I lived in Town Lane) or in the local "dump" at the bottom of the cinder path.
Also, I was the one that dug the hole under the metal fence so that you didn't not have to walk right round to get into the Oval. That hole under the fence is still there and used by the new generation of kids!!
I don't suppose anybody remembers Pershore house primary school?
Best school I ever went to, standard of teaching was second to none and the entire school was like a family, I don't think there were more than 200 pupils there at one time.
They knocked it down and turned it in to this monstrosity:
I does but only if you upload a decent sized imagine in the first place
Used to be on Prenton Lane just off Storeton Rd, right next to the church.
It was such a beautiful old building. Developers should be shot for knocking places like that down, they could've convert it into flats, but more profitable to knock the whole thing down and build more ''boxes'' for people to live in I guess...

Such a shame...
I used to go there............................... To deliver the mail. Right snotty gits they were too and that was just the teachers.
Posh school for posh kids whose parents paid so obviously the standard of education was good. I won't hold it against you though.
Posh school paid for does not necessarily = good standard of education... I still reckon if you're clever and determined enough you'll rise to the top in any school.

I'll second that, I went to a grammar school and im thick as shit. Think my mother sure did care about my education
Uncertainty or not knowing causes depression, Im happy because I know I'm going to die one day!
Indeed - I go to a shit school and still manage a 2:1 degree from a red brick university... as i say - its not the school its the pupil's intelligence and determination

What about BI, i think it was, in Bidston, next to the cemetery, now a housing estate.
Are you thinking of Tollemache School on the traffic lights. Naughty boys used to be sent there at weekends to scrub the floors, that would be in the sixties.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
I went to Weatherhead. The only thing that makes me sad about it`s demolision is the on the middle school site (where new primary has been built) in the hall they had the great big leather embossed(?) signs of all the old head girls. By the time I got there I think they`d given up on appointing head girls. Shame I never took much interest in the schools history. I heard it was bombed in WWII and that a girl died in the hall after falling from the balcony, if that is true, then now I am very sorry. I can remember looking over the balcony with that story in my head. Can anyone help on that?
used to go to cavendish when it was a all girls school.think building still there not sure what it is thought. was told school haunted by a young girl who saved her brother from fire in the school think she was called mary bell.
Used To Go to Lingham Primary In Moreton: The Wooden Bit I was in got demolished Then Went To Vyner Primary: That Got Shut Down Then Went To Park High: It's Getting Shut Down And Renewed.
Anyone remember the wooden annex that was part of Lingham Primary school on Maryland Lane when the school had 3 sites?
Barston Lane School. I used to live near there. I remember woodern buildings then a brick toilet block and there was 1 or 2 ugly buildings which would of been the canteen. The canteen became a boxing club and the school was used as Serve Wirral I think it was some Maggie Thatcher YTS training place.
I went to Lingham Primary school the lower school has been pulled down. I then went to Oldershaw once again the lower school has been pulled down. Then I went to Borough Road College and yes its been pulled down beat that.
i went to manor middle on the ford and it has been knocked down ,then went to bi and that got pulled down .i wouldnt say either was good at educating me but had the best time at both .as they say you only reap what you so
I went to The Woodlands primary (the original victorian building between bourgh road and the Woodlands)it was a spooky old building with a swimming pool the size of a hot tub behind the canteen. Our year was the last to leave for high school before they relocated to Whestone Lane.
i went to manor on the ford the fist day the school opened was called manor county only there a year moved to cavendish secondary school which hs now gone

Ive just been on facebook Ronnie, its all japanese to me, do I just put the woodlands in the search bar? I have asked for pics of the old school for ages so many thanks!
Anyone remember Hamilton Secondary school, for the sons of gentlemen, now looks as if it's an office and the playground is now a carpark,AG Evans the PE Teacher,McIntyre the headmaster followed by HE Hunt,Parry the woodwork master, life was hard but these made it harder. LOL
I remember Birkenhead Institute. I went to St Anselm's, and everytime we drove past on the minibus thing to the sports ground (in Noctorum), they were all standing outside shouting abuse at us. Really horrible school with reject scally pupils (sorry if anyone went there!). It's now gone, it's only famous pupil being Wilfred Owen, the war poet (of which a name under the grounds is named after).
what years were you there (me 57/58) I remember there were 4 forms for each year Upper and Lower 1a and Upper and Lower 1b Harry Lett was maths teacher The music teacher at the time used to play songs by Paul Robeson and used to tap you on the head with his baton which when it broke made him terribly upset I think A G Evans eventually moved to the Osses What were the house names

jeez, is your capslock stuck on!!!???
The only school that is left standing that I went to is Grove Street Infants school in New Ferry. My secondary schools have been demolished.
My old school is still been used. Its name has changed over the years. Temple Road School, then was called Prenton Secondary and is now called Devonshire Park
Ships that pass in the night, seldom seen and soon forgoten
Violet, I went to St Anselm's just post-war and the sports field was a rough area because they said it had been a gun site during the war. Any proof of that, anyone? It was OK for rugby and cross-country but not much else. Can you tell me where it was, I can't remember? We used to 'colaborate' with Upton Hall Convent! Is that still going?
Highfield in Bidston Road. I went there between 1950 and 1953. It was run by a formidable lady called Miss Williams. I beleve it has closed recently. I used to have to walk about a mile along Bidston Road by myself. Imagine doing that to-day. I did play truant a few times !!
I went to well lane,I left when I was in class two (1983 approx) my teacher at the time was an evil cow called Mrs Dickson. One day my coat got caught on the hooks in class, she could see I was stuck and she just left me there for what seemed like all day.She used to point at the class with what seemed like an ENORMOUS finger and stare at me with little pointy eyesShe terrified me that woman.Mrs olive on the hand was a bit of an odd ball who used to play the piano all the time in class 1.
I'd like to see a photo of the OLD St.John's, New Ferry, behind the church in Bebington Road. I went there during WW2 years. I'm not surprised it was abandoned as it was worn-out Victorian then, with worn concave steps and dusty floor boards. Half the playground was earth and the outside toilets were across this. There were big sliding partitions to divide the central space but they were not in place so there were 2 lessons going on at the same time! Difficult to concentrate! The desks must have been the original, all black and grooved tops. I used to let my mind wander and pretend the grooves were roads on a map. I'm still into maps! Bri

Kirklands Secondary Modern, Rock Ferry. No longer in existance but a good school many years ago. Girls one side of the school and lads the other. We had some real interesting staff teaching during my time. Mr Stockly science, Geof Arnold, English, Ema Davies, Art, Pritchard, History. The latter Pritchard would send you to join the girls class in the playground if you were caught looking through the window at them playing netball during his lesson. Didn't learn much at the time but but it was quite an education just attending the place.
Cathcart Street, yeh great days - a brilliant school that should never have been demolished. We had really good football and cricket teams ran by speedy, I was proud to pull on the red and white stripes at borough rd playing fields.Mr Goodier was our Headmaster with Mr George and Mr Cooper, Miss Quarry and Mr Baker in support. I left in 1963 to become a Birkenhead Idiot along with Richie O` Brien.

Did anyone else go to St Saviours C of E Primary School? It was next to the Arno in Oxton.I left in 1966,to go on to senior school. The Headmistress at St Saviours was Miss Foster. I remember Mr Chisholm, Miss Poulter and Mrs Davies. It was a lovely old Victorian building, it had big old doors with huge brass doorknobs and stone mullion windows. If I remember there were stone faces on the building, they may have been angels faces. We had to have our shool dinners in the church hall next door. that was the venue for our christmas concerts and school plays. The new school which replaced it was built at the top end of Holm Lane.I've always felt fortunate to have gone to the old school, it was a lovely old place.
Chisholm, Foster and Davies all taught me too but I dont remember Poulter, probably because I left in 1969 to go to secondary school. I do remember the old building and the parish hall but I also spent a couple of years in the new building after the old building was demolished.
I am still not able to make contact with any body from the the classes i was in at HEMMY from 1950 to 1955 Some of the Scallys in our class were Terry Lyons (CHEWY) Tommy Scully Norman Lewis Ronny Sutton Maurice Cartwright Robert Hughes Jonny Randell Brian Forrester to mention a few Is there anybody out there George Hayes

I worked and shared a tea hut with a Chewy Lyons (Terry) years ago when we were down the yard, a black haired lad with a dark complexion,he was a pipe welder, if its the same bloke you will need a medium to contact him I'm sorry to say.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.

Takes me back that school, I also used to have Mrs Ferguson. Another teacher stood out was mrs Jeoffrys she was hard indeed seen her get hit a few times and lay out the culprit. Also had Mr Viner for maths was hopless. I went there from 1980 to 84 I think the deputy headmaster was Mr Howls or something like that. Had many cainings there. I remember going to the girls school for PE and a mr Thompson used to own a BMW motortbike. Bygone age now I still have my school picture was supposed to be with my teacher Mrs Smith but she was off due to illness and we had it taken with Mrs Jeoffrys instead. Used to have a huge crush on Mrs Smith.

Hi Davew. Yeah I remember "Hemmie", I started in 1958 - 1962 in "Scott House" (Red Colour.) Remember L.T. Davis, he was my Form master, then there was Harry Lett, Technical Drawing Teacher, followed by Mr. Sullivan who used to sing songs while rapping your knuckles with a ruler...(sadist.) Don't forget Mr Bentley Science Master in the Annexe...(so uptight!) and dear old Mr.Prichard our Religious Instruction teacher, nice old soul. I still fondly think of them days, thanks for caring, (and daring,) to remember happier days gone by.
Hi Derek. Mr. Holtham was the Music teacher, ( got real carried away didn't he )their were four school houses, "Cook",(Green), "Drake" (Blue), "Nelson" (Yellow), and "Scott" (Red). I was in Lower 1A in 1958 then got promoted to the Upper A's on sitting the summer exams, nice of you to remember the music teacher, you jogged my memory with your recollection, but thats what its all about this forum, isn't it, keeping are minds sharp and active, cheers mate.
Please can someone put a google aerial pic up of the area which used to the playing fields of Whetstone Lane BI All I can remember from nearly 50 years ago was the part of the cross country runs up Thornton Rd and Storeton Woods. I think Tranmere Rovers took over them but had some agreement to keep a memorial? in existence there

The seven acres of land were bought in 1925, levelled and laid out as playing fields. In 1926 the old boys of the school funded the building of the pavilion as a memorial to those old boys who fell in the first world war. The pavilion was opened on 6th November 1926. The fields were called "The Mount Road Memorial Ground, Ingleborough Road".
In 1933 eighty eight poplar trees were planted to honour those pupils who lost their lives in the First World War. Also in 1933 the ornamental entrance archway was added, again through the generosity of Old Boys.
The site is listed with the Imperial War Museum as a First World War Memorial along with the eighty eight poplar trees planted on the boundary to honour the former pupils from the Birkenhead Institute who died in the First World War.
After the closure of the School, the playing fields were bought by Tranmere Rovers, covenants were imposed in the Deed of Exchange which protected the status of the Memorial Ground as a playing field.
The memorial gates were removed by Tranmere Rovers in 2001.
In 2006 Tranmere Rovers applied for planning permission to build housing on the site, although a spokesman for Tranmere Rovers chairman Lorraine Rogers, was quoted as saying: "The memorial will remain whatever happens to the land."
Thanks uptoncx googleview showing size compared to Tranmere Rovers ground
Looks like it will be sold for housing developement in spite of covenants. Where there's profit to be made, sadly there'll be ways of getting round the covenants
ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaa I used to crawl through that gap under the fence behind the artificial ski slope. I was from Town Lane and used to walk up the cinder path to get to The Oval baths

The school opened at the same time that the boarding school opened in 1863, at first it occupied part of the priest's house. The school moved into its 'new' building in 1871, this was greatly extended in 1914. St Joseph's school moved to its new building on Moreton Road in 1966.
The old building is still standing and is now used by Upton Hall School.

I went to The Woodlands primary (the original victorian building between bourgh road and the Woodlands)it was a spooky old building with a swimming pool the size of a hot tub behind the canteen. Our year was the last to leave for high school before they relocated to Whestone Lane.

George, Eddie Shields died years ago, I'm assuming he's the same one, he knew Chewy Lyons, the last one i told you who died, Eddie lived in the high rise flats that used to be by the Pilot, Duke St. probably the same bloke. As far as i know he went to Hemmy with Chewy.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
You are correct Eddie was a big mate of Chewy Lyons I think at one time Eddie lived off Oliver st near were Chewy lived in Wilson st, the last time i saw Eddie was in the Grange on Charing Cross having a pint ,that could have been between 30 to 40 yrs ago I have not lived in Birkenhead since 1962 i only got to see mates on my vists back home Thanks for the info its most welcome as i have not had much luck searching myself Cheers George
That's right George, i drank with Eddie in the Grange, when it was knocked down we moved to the Labour club( The York) Grange Rd, time flies, he died of throat cancer about 15-20 years ago. Went the match with him as well, good Blue.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
I went to Withensfield Middle School from 1981 to 1982, it is where Liscard Primary is now. There is a Centenary Summer Fair on 16 July and an open evening on 19 July from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. All former staff and pupils are welcome to take a tour of the building.

George, i went to woody sec, i can't say i know Donny and i would have gone to the Craftmans once or twice. Its just strange that you have mentioned a couple of blokes I've known. I knew Chewy from Lairds, Eddie i met through a lad called Pat Stanton around 1973, that name might ring a bell, Eddie and Pat were mates from childhood i think.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
vaguely recall a lad called Eddie Shields who lived in Collingwood st off Grange rd ( wouldnow be about 68 years old) and there was a Pat Stanton who lived in Oliver Place nickname (k)nucker? roughly same age or older. I used to go to the craftsmans regularly on a Thursday or Saturday night roughly about 1965 to 1969
Urko was General Urko in plant of the apes series, probably was a toy as well. Pat had a bad corn and used to walk like him, Urko was a gorilla by the way.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
Bert i had relations called Stanton they used to live in Horratio st of Grange rd, my cousons were Jimmy, Barbara, and one with an unusual name i think it was spelt MYRTLE, I have not seen any of them since about 1957 you never know they may be related to your mate

I went there from age eleven to sixteen. There were about 240 pupils so you knew everyone. Don't remember the socials at St Albans, but my dad was strict so doubt I would have been allowed to go. I was not allowed to go to English Martyrs Youth Club as he though 'Teddyboys' went there which was far from the truth.
I was allowed at fourteen to go to Scout Socials with my Mum and Grandmother. Big deal!
I loved my dad,and it was explained in later life that my parents did not want me to come to any harm. Unfortunately I hardly had any fun as a teenager and even older. It's weird to have more fun over forty than when you are younger!
Using church as an excuse I did manage to go to some Sunday afternoons at Kraal Club, and a couple of afternoon 'booze' cruises on Royal Iris until a neighbour who was on the boat spilled the beans!

I remember the school well. Marie Kaine, where are you now?
Just read this post, band I played in "entertained" ther on many Saturday evenings. Can't remember the name(s) we played under, like lots of other bands, these were changed regularly if we didn't go down too well. They weren't even called gigs then, they were bookings! A visit to The Boot was usually required, either before starting,or during the break. The second half always started with prayers from the Parish Priest before he rushed off to give "last rights" to his whisky bottle. It was something for lots of young folk to do,no trouble and paid for our equipment and beer. What more could a teenage "rock god" ask for?
I was going to Our Ladys school during the blitz a nd our Canon Tallon was killed when our junior school and the church was hit. This meant us having a short holiday while some teachers retrieved books etc from the half demolished juniors. How is that for health and safety. Our classes were then moved into the hall of the infants and the classes were taught side by side which made it very hard to concentrate. Happy days. Joney.
Hi im looking for information and school photographs of St Annes Primary school in 1963-1969 which used to be in Price St Birkenhead I have 2 photographs if anyones interested
You arent the only one that went to Cathcart street. My sisters, Jean,Angela, myself Stanley and brother Dennis all went there. We lived in Hope Street which was a two minute walk from the school and for our dinner we had to walk up the road to a seperate building. We shopped at Mr Tapeleys and went to church at St Peters sometimes.
Hello,I only know one name on your list and that was Jean Baker.Jean was my sister and went to Cathy along with my other sister Angela,my self Stanley and my brother Dennis. We lived in Hope Street which was a two minute walk from the school and shopped in Mr Tapeleys. We had to walk up the road to a seperate building for our dinner and when you reached a certain age you had to go to a seperate annexe for a year.
Looked through the backlog on this one, surprised how mixed up people get over some schools but still, it was a long time ago. I went to Trinity Street myself and then the BI, but the old BI on Whetstone Lane. That is the BI that Wilfred Owen went to. I was there until 1958. The school shut and then Tollemache Road, which was called a Secondary Modern, took the BI name over for some reason. The old BI was a Grammar School otherwise known as a High School. For some reason all the schools seem to be High Schools now. Progress......
