Lets be honest everyone, Vista is the biggest load of shit Microsoft have made, since Millennium (Windows ME) was developed - a fact that Microsoft's chief staff including the likes of Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates have both clearly admitted in the past few months.

Development of Blackcomb, Vienna/Windows 7 and Fiji is currently being rushed ahead as fast as Microsoft can possibly get them to market and forget entirely about the Vista farce - late 2009 is their current target for Windows 7 release, although I believe a Q1/Q2 2010 is more likely.

I know a minority of people havent really got a clue and defend Vista up to the hill, and yes it does have a couple of handy extra features over it's predocessors, however all in all, compared to Wistler and all it's variations including XP, XP MC, 2003 Server etc, it is utter bollex in so many ways, including a serious loss of simple but very handy feautres, shutting down times and loading up times are in most cases rediculous for a system that was originally planned to be "near-instant" and in multiple cases actully slower than XP, the user-friendliness has sort of disappeared in some elements and yet changed to absolutely pathetic in other elements of the GUI (take the rediculous stupid start menu, and the constant wizards that are wanting to tell you what to do whether you like it or not, as for the pathetic wireless interface, give me XP any day over the shit that Vista causes), and as for system resource usage, it is absolutely pointless that an operating system should require circa 1GB RAM and ass rape your processor, just to run.

Im not sure if anyone has used build 6159 of Windows Vienna/7 as yet, but the amount of XP features that are returning is actually quite shocking, imho they may as well just scrap NT 6.0 altogether and develop 7.0 on the back of 5.0/5.1. Windows 7 is Microsoft's final operating system (and the real successor to Windows XP - Vista was always a behind schedule and rushed, underdeveloped interim product created after Microsoft realised Blackcomb would'nt be ready before 2009) and they know they need to get it right this time; another failiure like Vista, and Microsoft could quite well go from being the giant they are right now, to a small time software company, like a couple of certain former-giants, namely Sun Microsystems, IBM etc...

Unless your laptop is an Intel Core2Quad or the forthcoming Intel Core i7 based on the Nehalem architechture, then I doubt very very much that your "experience" will be any different from that of my sisters laptop for instance, sporting a 2.33Ghz 1333Mhz 4MB Penryn no matter how new it is (lucky bitch makes my Northwood seem like a snail).

The OS isnt particuarly slow (although having said that its slower than XP at doing most things) but it slows down how you do most things because of the GUI, little changes they made such as the removal of the display properties option on the desktop tab, that mean you now have to go the long way round access it, and it offers zero gain, the new programs menu (major major step backwards, nobody can deny that) the constant bugging by wizards, have made it a very tedious operating system to use, especially to us IT professionals. Lets face it also, a lot of the "new" features, they have just stolen from OSX. Compatibility was also an issue upon launch, but its improved drastically since SP1 although it still tends to randomly bitch about the odd program, then install it minutes later without any issues! I suppose you also have to account for the fact is in the same position as XP was compared with 2000, by the time of XP's launch, 2000 had been around for 3 years and was a very mature, solid and stable OS, so it was the preferred option, the big difference is however, Microsoft didnt screw XP up by changing as much as they could on XP from 2000, the just took 2000 and made a few things better, made it look nice, but still gave users the chance like me to revert to the classic look and feel if they so wished to, I mean come on there is more difference between Vista and XP than there was between ME and XP, and they are running two entirely different and seperate kernels!!

Windows XP > Windows Vista

You have to come from an NT4 and NT5 background to understand fully how bad NT6 is in comparison. Microsofts own in depth survey to thousands of their MSDN members, bought back an average rating of just 4.4/10 - I guess we in the IT trade must be wrong however.

I am in charge of the purchase and deployment of windows machines, and have had endless problems with every single Vista Machine, it is so slow and it over "Secure"

Plus, since microsoft are clamping down on downgrading licences, it kind of doesn't give you a choice.

This PC is loaded to the gills with updates and the PC is fast running out of disk space. If I install SP3 can I bin all the previous updates?
