OVER 30,000 people flooded into Hoylake for the annual Lifeboat Station open day on Bank Holiday Monday.

The crowds were entertained by the always magnificent RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display team carrying out death-defying stunts over the beach before the town’s packed promenade.

Also on show were the Russian Flying Yakovlev team with more aerobatics, along with lifeboat and hovercraft tours, a funfair, a classic car display and some visiting microlite aircraft.

The annual event, organised by the RNLI along with Wirral Council, was held to help raise cash for a new lifeboat station at Hoylake.

The new station is almost complete which means last weekend’s event was the last to be based at the old 19th century station at the bottom of Alderley Road.

Once the new station is operational, the time it takes to launch a lifeboat will be slashed by seven minutes.

The new station will also be be able to house much more equipment.

Organisers estimated that around £20,000 was collected on the day.

Work on the new lifeboat station is expected to be completed by next month and in operation by November 1.
