very lucky mate

go get a new key cut tomorrow

you dont need a fob... if the alarm goes off, it will stop when you start the engine anyway

i found this out when my car started to ignore its fob

Yeah I am seriosuly lucky lol, I would need a new fob if I lose it mate. The alarm can be bypassed, but the immobiliser is on the ECU; the car won't start without a new fob coded to the ECU (about £80 all in) or the easier solution is a new ECU with a pre-coded fob (less hassle but about £100 for a recon unit).

Gonna be more careful now, attatched the key and fob to me house key's now, if they drop at least al hear them/notice them missing in me pocket!

Still thanking my lucky stars!!! Rhys was a lifesaver going back down the rock with us to look!

and the little chip that disables your immobiliser, you may find, is in the KEY not the fob

its the same with every car

No matey, it's in the fob... otherwise there wouldnt be tonne's of drivers on the MG-Rover forums (setup by MG Rover technicians and engineers) who are having no end of problems when their fob's break.

You can disable the immobiliser using the key, you do a code using it after you unlocked it. But me not have the code.

Without the fob to unlock the car, the immobiliser is on. If I leave the car for 16 seconds with the doors unlocked, the immobiliser is on until I press the unlock/unarm button on the fob.

I know it sounds a bit iffy, but this is how it is with Rovers frown

Basically, with just the key, you can unlock the door and that is it. Without the fob, the immobiliser will prevent you from starting the engine. With the fob and replacement key (ie. no "chip" or the like), the car will start fine, as the ECU has been told by the fob to disam the immobiliser.

Hence why so many people end up buying a refurb ECU and coded fob when they lose their fob, instead of just buying a new fob off ebay for a few pence... basically cos its less hassle.
