hello eveyone, i bought myself a '96 pug 306 on saturday (will start a MMC when i get home) anyway. when i took the car 4 a test run, i booted it on the motorway and no smoke from the exhaust and was fine on the way home. but last night when i went on a drive a noticed smoke coming from the exhaust when i put my foot down, but when cruising non at all. i got up this morning and noticed that the side where the exhaust is, is black up the boot and part of the number plate?

can anyone help me?????

Diesels smoke - end of.

Its just more noticable at night in headlights etc.

Excessive smoke is caused by over fueling - common problem is a blocked airfilter (wont hurt the change that) if it still does it, take it to a garage and get them to set up the diesel timing on the diesel pump - its dead easy on those engines smile

It could also be a weak actuator, ie the car is fueling for more boost that its getting, and thus giving a richer mixture...

18psi is a little high.

15psi or 1 bar is up from std, but safe.

They may have turned the boost up, and increased the fueling to suit. As 18 is maybe a little higher that it normally gets increased to, maybe they overfuel it a little to be safe...

Dont worry about the boost, its standard for a stage 1 tune to be set at ~18psi, the engines were originally built to do it anyway, but then lowered because the it helps prolong the life of the turbo of course and also because they couldnt have a derv outrunning a the XSi.

Is it a KKK turbo?

Maybe the fuel is still set for 18psi, and the actuator has weakened and thus over fueling then.

If its proven, then I guess its ok, but 18psi is quite high for a std car, the Nissan only runs 19psi on a bigger turbo, that lil derv blower must be working is socks off - no wonder they dont last laugh

I know 3 people who turned the boost up on those engines, 1 did a HG and the other 2 did the turbos, a record id steer on the safe side of myself smile

If he had it set by a specialist, id assume there would be some comeback if anything untoward happened to the turbo as a result of it? All the peeps on the 306 forums are running at upto 18.5 on standard setups (although very few go past 18) without problems, I know you can add a 406 IC and go even higher, but its hassle.

Was it a guy in shropshire who did the tune by any chance? Forget his name, but peeps know him as the dervdoctor, he got a excellent rep, got the rr etc... Thats where all the DTurbo guy's seem to go locally.

19 is a bit high to be honest, even if it was done by a specialist, without an IC it will cause problems for sure, even if they are only minor, and will deffo shorten the life of the turbo.

18 is the recommended, and as stuy says, thats quite a substantial increase already.

You can do it yourself quite easily, you will also need to adjust the fueling as well. You will need a boost gauge however - well some peeps risk doing it without it, but I wouldnt.

Here is a bit of info on the KKK turbo - http://www.pug306.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=12965

If you subscribe to their community supporter package (it was £5.00 per year when I signed up), one of the perks is summit called the bible... its absolutely fantastic resource, better then a Haines manual.

The guys on them forums will tell you absolutely anything and everything you need to know about 306's, help you with anything.
