Attacker of elderly man sentenced

Mr Chaudury walks with the aid of two walking sticks
A man who left a 97-year-old war veteran blind in one eye after attacking him on a packed tram has been given a three-year supervision order.
Stephen Gordon, 44, launched his unprovoked attack on Shah Chaudury in Croydon, south London, in December.

Gordon, from Croydon, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm after the attack was caught on CCTV, Croydon Crown Court heard.

The British Transport Police said they were "disappointed" with the sentence.

"The blow to the victim's head caused serious injury, which has resulted in the victim losing sight in one eye," said Det Sgt Darren Stenning.

Gordon was found guilty of grievous bodily harm

"And unfortunately since this assault, the victim's health has deteriorated and he now resides in a care home."

The attack took place on a tram travelling between Sandilands and East Croydon on December 14 last year.

Gordon had tried to push past the victim, who was standing in the aisle leaning on his walking sticks.

As he squeezed under the pensioner's arms his hat was knocked off and he swore at the man and punched him in the face.

Police said two school children who were on the tram chased Gordon. They later gave evidence against him.

that is not a sentence, its a mockery of the system, beating up a pensioner who was in his way.... its disgusting, the poor man could hardly stand as it was and got beaten severly by some useless no hoper !Who when caught only gets a supervision order... its a bloody disgrace ! mad

Yes, but correct me if I am wrong, it is the home office that creates the recommended sentences which imho are pathetic, it's the home office that has screwed up prison places and instructed judges to try and refrain from issuing custodial sentences as much as they can to help the prison over-crowding problems.

A judge merely works within the constraints of the laws and rules set down by the home office, if the government were any good with crime, this type of crime wouldnt be possible to commit without facing a custodial sentence when found guilty, especially in light of the clear CCTV evidence and witnesses.

People always blame the police/cps and/or judges when these types of pathetic sentences are handed out, im getting sick of the government getting away without any blame time and time again, because they are the root cause of the problem.
