Maybe not:

Quote
The force has not confirmed whether the suspension includes LTI 20.20 laser speed detectors used in speed camera vans.

There has been much controversy of the reliability of the 2020 in other countries in the past, so it wouldnt surprise me, I think its summit to do with how the officer uses the device rather then the device itself.

Just thought it maybe a little more grabbing as there is a user with that name smile

i know many parts of america they've banned numerous types of speed guns and in one or two european countries too, watched a documentary a while ago disputing their reliability lol

Operational procedures and red tape on usage are one thing, its storys like this that can seriously effect peoples confidence in their use.

If your speeding, then its a fair cop, I was issued 3 points (Plus a fine) for speeding in my first 3 months of driving, and to be fair, it did me a favour, and slowed me down.

But to be observing the speed limit, and inaccuracy results to an Fixed penalty.... as joe public, where would you stand to prove your innocence... frown

yep..and if you carry out the checks properly it negates all the "defences" that documentary alledged exsisted...

from wot i remember they were putting it all on how the government calibrated in the UK them... but as matty said, i imagine it has a lot to do with the officer behind it as to how accurate it's usage is..

that's exactly y i think they should only be used in the manner by where if they pic up u are speeding within say 10mph of the speed limit u r in then they should just pull u, give u a polite warning and send u on ur way... obviously if u're doin more than that by the gun that then more action should b taken

Yeah, but if they dont issue a fixed penalty notice, then it like saying "your fine to do 40 in a 30 mate". It sets the precident.

On two sepearate occasions, in two different locations, I have had near-accidents where I have been doing ~30mph and a kid has run out into the road without looking, and if i had been doing 35mph, I would have hit the kid, but because I was doing the speed limit, I stopeed with only a metre or so to spare.

The speed limit has clearly prevented those accidents, and to me, that is more then enough justification for anyone doing over 32/33mph to be rewarded with a fixed penalty notice.

Drivers who drive at around the 40 mark in 30 limits, even if its only 37/38, no very well what they are doing, and they are well aware of the risk they are taking, not only with regards to police but also from a saftey standpoint.

I think this thread may have strayed from its intentional discussion frown

Initially, the question was about the supposed suspension of the guns - is it true? What where the reasons for the suspension if it was? (Sorry if you felt the title put you a bit on the spot LTI frown )

The second link Ive posted was regarding the supposed inaccuracy of a mobile speed camera - which I suspect is pretty much all automated and had no human intervention (If it did, id be very surprised if a highly trained traffic officer was involved).

However, the good things to come from the thread is the appreciation of the factors you measure LTI, though the best way to avoid being caught speeding, is not to do it....

Sorry to go off topic, but does that mean if you are more than 20mph over the speed limit then a normal police officer can not take chase and pull you, also is it true that there must be 2 officers present to issue a ticket of any offence?

Theres just a lot of myths and tales going round and it may make your job easier if you were to clear them up, as you have doen, thanks.

for example = I was told that there needed to be two officers, but obviously there doesnt (does your camera, count as your witness?) So if I was to be stopped for speeding by a patrol car that only had 1 officer, I could be thinking "well you cant ticket me anyway" and not be as helpful/respectfull/SORRY as I should be, then end up getting banged to rights and the book thrown at me.

Do you know of any other myths/rumours that are also wrong?

=LTI2020lets be honest if your doing 45mph in a 30mph and you miss us stood there in hi-viz jackets...you should expect to get points.

But 9 time s out out ten your not just standing there, you always hiding behind corners in snide places, knowing full well people go up and down that bit of road really quickly, so instead of whackin a speed cammera there , so people can remember it and not speed there, you return to known hot spots and sting every one.

But wouldnt ye agree that doing 45 in a 30 limit is speeding, and therefore breaking the law?

We all speed at times, im sure of that, but when we do, its a choice that we all make, and we all very well know the potential consequences of that decision should we wither have a crash or get caught by a police officer.

So there isnt really any argument, whether they are hiding or not, its immaterial, its still breaking the law, just like is it fair when plain clothes officers follow someone and then arrest them for something like shoplifting, I think ye will agree its fair.
