Mersey Tunnel - Core Samples

Unfortunately there on the other side of the fence frown
And your not allowed to go in with out a pass.

O well.

Core Samples : These are the parts extracted when drilling down
under the river bed. They Drill Down then Bring up the casings
to open them and the contents examined to show the layers in the rock.

the piece on the left if turned upside down?

By core samples, you mean big lumps of rock taken from underground, where the mersey tunnel is now, to test its properties etc?

Thought so, just thought I best clarify for those that didnt know think

To be honest I originally thought you meant big steel rods that went in the ground to test it. not the actual samples taken

Just seen the photo of the core samples. Just a little puzzled as they look a bit on the big(diameter)side for samples. I've seen quite a few core samples taken through various rocks, usually site investigation stuff. The diameter is usually about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Brought up via the hollow drill and then laid out in special boxes to go to the lab. or be inspected on site.

The only cores of such size I've seen is when wells are sunk into water bearing rock. The diameter is large enough for an electric submersible pump to be lowered down the "shaft"

A friend of mine was a fitter at the old Co-oP dairy on Swan Hill (now a garage or similar). One of his jobs was to raise the pump up the "shaft" once a year for servicing. They had their own well, just about the same diameter as the cores in the picture.

Where was the pic. taken ??

Willing to be corrected on the above theory.. and of course ........ everyone loves a smart***e !!!

You make a good point, Mike. I agree that they look to be about 5 or 6 feet in diameter. On checking in the book about the construction of the tunnel, the largest core sample mentioned is 6". If these are indeed from the tunnel, maybe they're from the construction of a drainage sump. Can you tell us where these are, Mark, or is it a secret?

There in SHELL they have them, there is a plaque apparently
but that's on the inside of the fence side.

I'm going off what i was told on the plaque,
so i cant 100% say so. But hopefully some one may have a picture.

Where?
If you go past camel lairds, and take the rock ferry by pass
just as you leave the roundabout towards Brombrough,
the road twists left then right and then a (50)mph sign.
There on the Left of that snaky bit.

I agree they look pretty big

I've had a thought about this. We know that for the Queensway tunnel, 2 pilot headings were excavated throughout the length, to check on conditions. These were dug in the traditional manner.
When it came to the Kingsway (Wallasey) tunnel, techniques had advanced & they were not dug, but bored. Maybe these cores are pilot borings from the Wallasey tunnel.

Okay i have enquired about the info.
I want to blame my source but he will blame me for getting mixed up.
At the time i guess we were talking about the Mersey Tunnels
and then core samples were mentioned.
So it was a case of 1+1=3

But they are samples from the mersey of the bed rock. smile

Hoseman below has these pinned down as he was my source lol.
