Whats the difference?

I believe that ADSL has a built in modem for phone line broadband.
where as DSL is to be used on Cable broadband that comes down fibre optic.

can any one explain more about them please.........

thanks

ADSL is a "type" of DSL when upstream differs to downstream, A Meaning Asymetrical, there are several types, SDSL HDSL etc.

Most ADSL routers have modems in them to connect to the internet, I am not sure how the cable routers work, as i have never seen them in action.

To be sure, buy a router for your specific needs, buying an ADSL router for an ADSL connection. Unless you don't require a modem in your router, if that is the case, it shouldn't matter what router you buy.

I would always recommend Draytek Vigor Routers, the list of features makes it worth paying the extra few quid

We currently have a Netgear DSL Wireless router as we are on VM, but we are moving house and dont know if we will get VM broadband or BB down the phone line, can you use a DSL router with a seperate modem for BB down the phone line.

A bit off topic but I want the following from my network/router:

  • To be hardwired for streaming and downloading purposes with the option of wireless for mobile browsing
  • Network Attached Storage, to be accessable by 2 laptops at the same time
  • USB printer sharer
  • Multimedia streaming to the laptops and/or through a media station connected to a 32" LCD and the AUX on my hifi

Could you use a server for Network Storage? Just an old PC would probs do.

Alot of the Drayteks i have used in the past have USB port for networking non-network printers.

I did consider using an old tower I've got, filling it with a few network cards I've got, and a few hard-drives again that I allready have. but power consumption was an issue, aswell as size.

Im looking at one of these: Freecom Storage Gateway

I did consider getting a media centre to act as a main hub and then wirelessly sharing my BB/hardrive/printer through that. but its all about the benjimans innit.

Freecom Network MediaPlayer-350 WLAN

Waddi i have a DSL for VM
the only real diffrence is that you need somthing to dial up if your going via a telephone line. So if that's your set up then you need a ADSL to dial up and make the connection / conversion.

DSL
As my connection is direct to my set topbox, then my set topbox acts as a modem so i dont need that part of the equation. That's it in its simplest form.

If youre in any doubt, call your provider if in your case its Vergn Media, you will be told, we dont support any ask the vendors. But bare in mind if your going wireless you need a
reliable wireless router / adsl or dsl or what's the point.

I guess the likes of NETGEAR LINKSYS do well is because they will help you with a problem. I was on the phone (fee call) to Linksys talking to some chick in the philipeans at 2am configuring my remote access points (Software glitch) point being there was support there when i need it. As it was also them who told me the correct configuration for virgin media wink

Hope that helps.

Arnt the modem suppliers just uding DSL as a naughty way to describe it as a "broadband" router (ie. a modem that can accept the connection of an external ethernet/USB always on modem), and this is one of those silly little technical things that cause confusion.

A DSL router should as AX said, be one that incorporates a DSL modem or be compatible only with DSL technologies, but it seems not thanks to naughty manufactureres haha.

Theres my rant for the day, im going back to bed, im half asleep and I shouldnt even be up for another 4 hours haha, stupid bloody servers lol mad

So long as its a router and doesnt incorporate a DSL modem, then yes.

It looks ok, but my be difficult to configure first off but not impossible.

If you can, contact the manufacture and see if they have the settings for the unit to work with VM wink

Because you will have to ask someone.
