The government are trying to decrease the numbers of cars in use and trying to get more people using public transport.
With these latest price hikes, massively above the rate of inflation, it will make the goverments efforts almost worthless.

This will only cause more people to use their cars.

BBC News tried to find out the cheapest method of transport from London to Manchester return. Flight came out the most expensive at around £260, Trains next at £215 while the same journey by car would cost only £160. A massive difference, especially for the majority of the working class.
Imagine having to make similar journeys day-in and day-out to and from work and home.

And all this crap about making improvements to services is nonsense. We will hardly see improvements whatsoever, if, non at all. The only ones who will see improvements is the fat cats with the increases in profits and pay cheques.

The only way to get the public using more public transport is to undo what the tories did and re-nationalise the public transport sector

Re-nationalise public transport gringringrin

Obviously you don't realise the diabolical state British Rail was in prior to the 1994 privatisation scheme.

Even still, privitising it was the easy way out.

The government should of stuck with it, invested money in it, as they should of with the NHS too. The result would of been not far off, possibly better than France's public transport and Health service

All this money being spent in Iraq and Afganistan could go towards national services here, but instead, America sneezes and Britain catches cold.

if not re-nationalise, what would you suggest to get more people using more public transport at cheaper cost to the consumer?

This is something I moan about all too often, but the general public perception is that we should waste money re-building Iraq for the US.

BR made HUGGGGGGGEEEEE mistakes during their time, they NEVER once made a penny of profit, they were always battling bankruptcy and having to be bailed out by the government.

One of the most stupid decisions in history was the Beeching Axe of 1963, in which closing down over half of the entire rail network, saved them a measly £7million a year in todays money!!!

There was never enough investment when BR were the big guns, look at the failed APT, we could have had the most advanced passenger train in the world running, but instead we ended up with the InterCity 125 as the result of years of development of the APT.

Whilst Virgin and company may not be perfect, they run a far more reliable, sustainable and modern service then BR were ever capable of running.

Re-nationalising is not the way forward... 1948 the rail network was made entirely public, and in 1994 it still couldnt make a profit and lagged far behind any other country in the western world.

Obviously BR were doing something wrong then, as France and other Eurpoean countries have invested hugely in their public sector and the turnout has seen great gains.

Yes, I agree, Virgin and likes are doing a better job than BR, but no matter what, they will always be run for profit which will always mean the working class will never get the best deal. Even if there is a fall in profits, not even losses, jobs will be lost and the consumer will pay.

Yes, but the consumer would rather have a "reliable" train service to get them from a to b, then a cheaper one that suffers from massive under-investment, serious reliability problems and blatently stupid cost cutting decisions, as well as regular nationwide strikes due to arguments over pay and the constant worry of bankruptcy.

Its all well and good saying the government should invest more, I agree that they should. But they never will as they have far too much interest in feeding the habits of smack heads, looking after assylum seekers, keeping prisoners in luxury and re-building Iraq to worry about our own public services such as health and policing and transport.

The problem is, the privitised rail network isn't as reliable as consumers would like especially for the increased costs.

Exactly, so the only way that the government will change is to get rid of the Blairites (Blair, Brown, Prescott e.t.c) and have someone who can actually run the country properly.

who can run the country properly, that is the big problem with politics, u cant please everyone, i,like a lot of people think that the chavs and immagrants shudnt get a penny from the goverment, but a lot of people (namely the chavs and immagrants) think that they are entitled to money, then theres all the other issues. The goverment have to pick and chose who and what gets money, and it just so happens, that labour are utter dogshit at their decisions, shame BNP are so right wing, theres nothing right wing about wanting to clamp down on immagration (which BNP want to do) but they also want to stop women working etc,bit right wing
