I just hate classic VW's with a passion ...though I have heard of a few converions which have involved a Subaru engine being fitted to a beetle...

Because they look crap, make a gay noise, and dont serve any useful purpose.
Same applies to Campers
Plus a friend an I hit 2 of them at another mates garage and damaged a rusty wing and a rusty bumper - the bill was extortionate for some rusty german junk!

To be honest, the back end will take a lot, everything is mounted at the back, the gearbox, the engine the differential the axle, etc.
Or try and get a new Mexican one, there will definately be auto in there. She wants a 69 automatic? I think she'll be waiting a long time!

Beetles are great have had 2 of them, I had a 67 with the sloping headlights. Also had a 69 with the upright must say I prefer the sloping eadlights, yep am sure the autogearbox would fit. You want to go to the vw and aud centre in hoylake they used to be know as beetle mania am sure their mechanics would give you some advice. Or theirs a guy called steve piercy who has a garage by woodside ferries I used to take mine to him all the time, really knows his stuff.

Ive owned 60 odd old vws inc 2 semi-auto's
They arent a full automatic!!!! i.e. P.D.1.2.3 gears.
They need the gear stick.
The auto floor has IRS rear suspension and torsion front. This is the best floor pan for a beetle so many where cut up for buggies and race beetles.
As for being pooh, fair comment,BUT most mild tuned beetles will whooooooooop a modern hot hatch on the drag strip. Due to the engine weight being over the rear wheels,RWD of cause.
My bug used to run 14.02 on the strip and a chap I know from chester runs 10s!!!!!
If you need anymore info give me a call and I will find you a bug
