Look, this is all a matter of opinion. If you think that it's okay for your taxes to pay for renovating a palace that accommodates the very, very, rich and privileged, who live there for free, that's fine. More fool you. But don't try to convince me.

Well said Granny. Buckingham Palace is like the masthead of England and has to be maintained like any other historical building. What would people like to see a load of immigrants in there! Wonder what the outcry will be if she ever gets another Royal yacht, in my eyes she should still have the royal yacht Brittania and that should have been maintained too.

Yeah, well I'd prefer to see the £369 million spent on the NHS. But, as I say, it's only a matter of opinion.

I think it is a bit obscene to announce it at the present time when everybody is struggling, it reeks of elitism and re enforces the first in the queue and the us and them attitude that motivates this government, anarchy prevails when the wishes of the people are ignored, if they keep getting their noses rubbed in the dirt and they feel that there is no one that represents them, and when the alleged democracy that we have fails to represent them, a Monarch and a palace is all very nice, if we can afford it.

And Casper, if the place went on fire with hundreds of lives at risk, what would be said then ?

The Crown Estate is one of the largest property owners in the United Kingdom, producing £211 million for the Treasury in the financial year 2007–8.[7] and with holdings of £7.3 billion in 2011.[37] The Crown Estate is not the private property of the Monarch. It cannot be sold or owned by the Sovereign in a private capacity,[38] nor do any revenues, or debts, from the estate accrue to her. Instead the Crown Estate is owned by the Crown, a corporation representing the legal embodiment of the State. It is held in trust and governed by Act of Parliament, to which it makes an annual report.[37] Revenue from the Crown Estate is thought to be due to double in real terms in the period to 2020 with additional lease revenues deriving from the development of offshore wind farms within Britain's Renewable Energy Zone,[39] the rights of which were granted to the Crown Estate by the Energy Act 2004.

What would be said? I would imagine the report would read, property neglected and been allowed to fall into a state of bad repair and should have been upgraded and maintained years ago, and that the cost of so doing would have been considerably less at that time, we all have a responsibility granny even HRH or those that advise her, at the end of the day its all about how people perceive things, and they see those at the top being cosseted and protected while they struggle, its human nature, and I might add so very unfair.

£369 million over 10 years equates to £36.95 million per year.

Palemoon says the money should go to the NHS ??? NHS gets £107 billion per annum . £36.9 million would not even scratch the top of the needle and the NHS money comes out of a totally different budget anyway. The tax payers do pay into that little pot.

You say we should get rid of the Queen. She won't see the final renovations, I'm sure .

So what you are saying, is get rid of the Monarchy and put Mrs May in Bucks Palace, just like Mrs Merkel has her official residence in Germany. Have you seen Mr Putin's Palace ?

Mrs Merkel's official residence of the Federal State.I believe that was originally the home of Prince Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia, until the Nazi's got rid of the Monarchy. Who pays for that now ?Bucks Palace would still be paid for out of the Crown Estates, whoever got their foot in the door.

Casper: His words " A Monarchy and a Palace are all very good if we can afford it "

He doesn't think we can afford it.

We can't but they can. I'm sure that if the filthy rich who live there have a whip round each year they could easily managed to accumulate a mere £36.9 mill.

It was the inference in Rudebox first post, subsequent posts mixed with a bit of sarcasm and editorial licence in response to it.
