hi there,

I am looking for a picture of Wesley Terrace off Liversidge Road off Derby Road Tranmere.
Not sure when the terrace was demolished (as I couldn't find it the other day) assume it was some years ago.
would like to find a picture during the 1930's if possible

I will try the Wirral archives at some point but wondered if anyone on here might have a picture or be able to point me towards one on the web

many thanks
homerj

I hope someone comes up with one for you, in the meantime,

Photographic index at Birkenhead Library, might be lucky.

Although it's not named on this O.S. map of 1912, I assume it's the group of four houses off Liversidge Rd. behind the Methodist church.
Just posted the map in case it triggers someone's memory.

I can't disagree Chris, but.....but....but, the 1916 directory only has 3 properties and the 1911 census summary book only has 3.

More looking into me finks.

Possible answer,

Could the 4th property be, Rose Hill.

Interesting. It looks as if the right hand side of Liversidge Rd. (starting at Church Rd.) was called Rose Hill. I think that we are both using the Willmer's 1916-16 directory. The directory has no even numbers on Liversidge Rd. and if you count the first one of the (supposed) Wesley Terrace as being 2 Rose Hill, the numbering fits the map. What's with the un-numbered property occupied by Robert Blackett and Mary Smith though?

I wondered myself if one side was Rose Hill, having checked the 1911 census for Liversidge Rd, a number of occupants match the directory, in there own hand they give their addresses as Liversidge Rd. See below.

Perhaps, Blackett and Smith occupied Rose Hill and the Liversidge numbering carried on, again, perhaps the setting out of the directory is misleading.

More checking required.

1910 directory, no, Wesley Terrace or Rose Hill,

Note 2 to 24 with 6 missing, 1916 directory, 2 to 26 with 14 missing.

O.K. I now think that the block of three houses behind the church, (the fourth one was No.2 Liversidge Rd.), was originally called Rose Hill and later the name was changed to Wesley Terrace, (probably because no roses would grow there and it was next to the Wesleyan chapel).

morning

only just got back onto the wiki page so a bit behind all your great posts - much appreciated.

I have found two other mentions of Wesley terrace as detailed below from a couple of newspaper clippings in the London Gazette. One from 1867, where the person living in 2 Wesley Terrace was up for bankruptcy and another about smokeless zones which shows the terrace was still there in 1973 although only numbers 1,2 and 3 are mentioned.
pdf file attached with the news clippings.

will get myself down to the archives to see if i can find a pic but enjoy gathering all the other info :-)

thanks for that link - I note that in the reference library online photo list there are some references to Liversidge road regeneration photos in 1980s so may take a peek at those. thanks

Hi in a book called Murder and Mayhem in Birkenhead by David Malcolm there is ref to a murder suicide in 1909 at No 2 Liversidge Road. The names mentioned tie in with information in other posts and the ref to Rose Hill as the name mentioned in the book is Nicholas. The book says that the houses are demolished and a children's play ground stands on it now (just grass in 2014). There is a small picture of Liversidge Road taken in 1909 looking down from Church Road towards Derby Road but you can not see No 2.The photographer would have just been in line with the houses you want to see. Hope this is of use and gives you ideas of where to look for other information.

Just as an update.
Checked out the library photos for those including Liversidge Road but non of them include Wesley terrace (3 of the 4 look up Liversidge Road and Wesley terrace would be just out of view of the pics :-(

Thanks for your inputs, I'll keep looking.
I had wondered if someone from the church might have had some as it was just at the back of the church.

The 1875 OS map shows seven houses in Wesley Terrace, three of which were demolished prior to 1910 to make way for the new Sunday School. The three remaining houses whose front doors faced the Chapel were 1-3 Wesley Terrace, but the entrance to the fourth one was on the side, so it was numbered 2 Liversidge Road.
