Here’s some pictures from my last outing. The usual load of buttons, crusty coppers and other bits and pieces. Had a lovely 1846 four pence, a1934 sixpence, a German 1905 half mark, and my friend had the silver sixpence bank token! Other bits include a mahony’s clothing token with an eagle pictured on it, lead bag seal and another watch winder

I can't believe they were so careless with money, its almost as bad as classroom floors, kids won't pick up anything less than a quid these days.

Love it that you're finding such interesting things Ex, you must be getting quite a haul now. Never heard of a fourpence coin and that bank token great...I must admit my favourite find is the Ladybird ha what beep do they make when detector hits them ha, ...really good stuff keep it up ..

Yes cools I’ve got a load of stuff now haha, love finding it all. I couldn’t resist getting the ladybird in on the action as she was right next to the hole haha. The four pence is Maundy money. They done alsorts. Here’s a picture of some other silver coins I have, very small and on a 10p for scale!

What a lovely hobby. My mind goes into overdrive on seeing these sort of things. Imagining that the farm hands were tilling the fields, and walking towards home at the end of a long day minus a few pence which could be the next days dinner money. Such a hard life they had, but possibly more fulfilling than our own in many ways.

Or families crossing the fields on their way to church on a Sunday morning,( often one of two attendances on a Sunday) a duty in such communities, and to be showered in fire and brimstone from the pulpit to make them better people.

Them getting excited about the harvest crops, gathering it in and the villages coming together to celebrate .

Would be great to find something Viking, and it's strange we don't hear about any such finds in this area.

As a boy I was brought up in a mining village in South Wales. Near my home was a steep hill which led to a series of streets further up the hillside. One morning after a heavy snowfall, my friend and I spotted some money in the snow.- several coins including a half-crown (A fortune to us) and a light bulb illuminated over our heads.

Men returning from the pub to their homes had to negotiate this steep hill, and some slipped on the ice and fell. Money would as often as not fall from their pockets and in the darkness they would not be able to find it.

We set to work, and managed to pick up several pounds worth each. This was real money in - I guess about 1950. No metal detector of course. We repeated this until the ice melted and more than doubled our take!

Fascinating - what is a clothing token?

Just noticed, the three halfpence (1½ d) wasn't used in the UK at that time, it was only in the colonies and only issued for a total of nine years, the British three-halfpence disappeared before 1600.

Is there a poem or a book that uses the term three ha'pence? I seem to know the term well or perhaps we just used that term for the value and not a coin?

Pretty much used instead of money, like a voucher.

The threehalfpence wasn’t a find, it was something I bought years ago for my daughters silver coin collection. Not sure of a poem though haha
