Moreton History IanFife 1st Apr 2024 12:03pm I am in the process of writing the history of my father's early life and his time spent in the RAF in WW2. He joined the RAF in 1939 at the age of 17, before that he worked at a printers in London.
I have an envelope from a letter posted to him in London from Moreton in April 1936, when he would have been 14 years old. Unfortunately I don't have the letter itself, but the back of the envelope is stamped:

"Robinson Bros. Barnston Lane Moreton Wirral"

I have had no luck in finding out what Robinson Bros did or exactly where they were, so hoping someone on the forum might be able to help me discover why my father wrote to them in 1936.

Campbell Terrace, behind old St. Andrew's Church on Conway KimTheilmann1 31st Mar 2024 2:34pm Hello! I am trying to find some general information about a small street in Birkenhead, long since demolished. My grandmother lived at #2 Campbell Terrace as a very young girl, circa 1900.

I believe there were only 8 houses on the street. Does anyone have any more information, links, or photos (fingers crossed!).

And, were the houses owned by the Church?

Their proximity to Charles Thompson mission was probably key to the family's survival. They were in and out of the workhouse twice between 1899 - 1902.

I wonder if this will be eventually used for identifying you with a link to your bank account saving even more hassle and fumbling to pay for your groceries?

Another possibility is to automatically determine whether you are old enough to buy alcohol or other products. At 81 I'd have thought it obvious in my case, but I still get asked asked occasionally if I'm old enough to buy alcohol. Usually, I reply its for my grandfather who is playing rugby at the moment.

I like the idea of being recognised for payment and plan to wear an Elon Musk mask.

Tall Brick Chimneys diggingdeeper 16th Mar 2024 11:56am With demise of the tall brick chimney at the old oleo works/mill on the corner of Canning Street and Sandford Street in Birkenhead, I was thinking about how many tall brick chimneys Wirral has left.

Staying outside Cheshire I can only think of a few:-

D.I.Y. / Building Shop mharford91 3rd Mar 2024 8:53pm Hello from Canada!

I'm trying to do some research on my family, who I believe used to own a shop in Bebington. It was a D.I.Y. / timber supplier and possibly builder. From researching old phone books, I believe it was located at 2A Bromborough road. It's listed in the phone book as "Harford W.E. & Co, Bldrs Mrcnts" and later, "Harford W.E. & Co, D.I.Y."

Does anyone remember this shop, or even better, have any photos of it?

Edit: I should add, I'm not sure when it first opened, but the phone book entrys I looked at are from the 1970's and 1980's.
